Ready to Play: The Faust Festival 2018




The Faust Festival is a showcase for our youth theatre groups ages 4 to 16, a chance for our young actors to demonstrate their creativity, talent and commitment at a professional performance space. Since 2000, we have staged over 1,000 performances with over 8,000 members acting out exciting stories for audiences.

New Stories, Old Favourites
Each year we have a selection of new plays as well as old favourites to perform. New plays this year include The Frog Prince, Sky Pirates of Neverland, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Wild Things, The Odyssey and more! Returning shows include Hollywood Shakespeare, What You Will, Arabian Nights and more, given to different groups to allow everybody to experience something different each year.

The selection was carefully curated by the Faust Team of leaders to allow our young actors to tell fun and engaging stories and perform as one of the many fantastic and colourful characters.

Combined Efforts
Over the years the Faust Festival has grown in size and number. To make this experience be the best it can be, our younger members will be performing their version of the same tale. Our 4 to 5 year olds will perform Peter Rabbit and our 6 to 7 year olds will perform either The Bremen Town Musicians or The Curious Chase of the Gingerbread Man. This combined approach allowed us to share resources as well as increase production values on props and set. We can’t wait to show you what is in store!


A Tale of Two Venues
For our younger age groups 4 to 11, we will continue to stage their shows at the HK Arts Centre in Wan Chai, our home for the Faust Festival for over 15 years. For our older age groups 12 to 16, we wanted to present a larger space to challenge their performance capabilities at Youth Square in Chai Wan. Each professional theatre venue is ideally suited for their age ranges.

Every Actor’s Moment to Shine
One of the many reasons our Faust Festival has continue to grow with many returning members is the shared opportunity for all to perform their best. Our scripts are chosen carefully with every director keenly aware of individual abilities and fair division of roles. We write and edit our plays with our students in mind to ensure that everyone has their moment to shine. 


A Theatrical Feast for the Family
The Faust Festival is a 4 week extravaganza full of fun, excitement and surprises. It is a chance to entertain family and friends with stories of adventure, friendship, humanity and love. At the core of our work, we want our actors to seize the opportunity to perform and increase their capacity to be creative and brave in front of audiences. Each and every child is important to us and each moment they choose to step into the spotlight and speak up is a winning moment for all.

Creative Leaders - An Interview with The Team behind Hong Kong Live Play Readings

Today we have an interview with the team responsible for Hong Kong Live Play Readings, bringing actors in the US and HK together to perform plays online.  Could you let us know who you are please? We are Rebecca J Merritt and Davina Lee Carrete and we are freelance artists in Hong Kong. You both run Hong Kong Live Play Readings – a group on Facebook. And can you let us know how HKLPR got started ? Davina:  Rebecca told me about her actor friends in the US reading plays together online and I said we should do that here! We created a Facebook group, added performers we know in Hong Kong and Rebecca then invited her pals in the US. We have been reading together for the last month. Mad About Hamlet

Stage Group has had the privilege of performing some of the world’s best-known plays including The Crucible, Waiting for Godot, The Tempest, Romeo & Juliet, King Lear and more. After 3 years of masked performances, we are thrilled to bring you an unmasked performance of Hamlet at the Hong Kong Arts Centre from April 27 th to 29 th 2023 .   Everybody has heard of Hamlet - most people can probably identify him as “that guy who thinks too much and holds a skull” or characterise the play as “the one where everybody dies at the end.” However, Hamlet is also considered a significant, serious piece of literature with ever growing literary criticism, reinterpretations, homages, references and parodies.    In our adaptation of Hamlet, we have decided to strip down the tragedy to its core and let the characters breathe and be recognised as fallible, strange and relatable humans.
